A different photograph of the Rokujizo figures was carried in the October 16, 1871 (September 3 on the lunar calendar) issue of The Far East (photograph #1082). In photographs of Kamakura taken in the early Meiji Period, however, the structure in which the jizo statues are housed and the atmosphere of the surroundings are different. This casts some doubt on whether the jizo depicted here are those in Kamakura. Part of a collection of official photographs from Middle and Far East, World War Two (1939-1945). Collected by Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) Sir Frank Walter Messervy. The Battle of the Admin Box took place on the Southern Front of the Burma theatre in February 1944. The 5th and 7th Indian Divisions suffered over 7900 casualties, but successfully resisted Japanese attacks for the first time in the campaign. In doing so they pioneered methods which would lead to further Allied victories over the following year. Date: 1944

              The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) made of bronze. Designated as a National Treasure in 1897, it is the main object of worship at Kohtokuin Shojosenji Temple. Historic documents state that work began on a gilt statue of Shaka Nyorai Buddha about 13.5 meters in height in the year 1252. It is not known when it became a statue of Amida Buddha.                   Buddhist statues on the Sanmon Gate of Chion-in Temple. The Buddha is seated in the middle, flanked by Zenzai-doji, Shudatsu-choja, and the 16 Buddhist Saints. Unryu (dragons in clouds) and other motifs are painted on the ceiling. This is the largest gate of its kind in Japan, with five bays and three entrances.                     The Rokudo Jizo are typical examples of stone Buddhist statues in Hakone together with the Magai botoke of Nijugobosatsu. It was carved on a rock facing Shojin Lake at the foot of the Mt. Kamifutagoyama, and has a height of over 4 meters. It was completed in 1300, and the Buddhist ceremony to consecrate a newly made image was conducted by Ryokan Boninjo.
