This same photograph can be found in the memorial photograph album of Charles Appleton Longfellow, first son of the famous American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who lived in Japan from 1871 to 1873. Charles may have asked Uchida Kuichi to take this shot, and it could be Charles wearing a kimono and looking out from between the shoji screens. The woman second from the left is Okiku, owner of the restaurant Yumei-ro at Sanyabori, and the other women are Charles' favourite geisha.     The big bell of Chion-in Temple is seen from the west side of the bell tower. Men and women in kimono are looking at the bell over the iron fence.       The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.
