        The residences of feudal lords were formerly located here as protection on the west side of Edo Castle. However, the area was converted to a garden after the great fire of the Meireki Period in 1657. The garden was designed in exact detail, right down to the location of each stone and tree. There were apparently two waterfalls in the garden, one at the southern edge of Oike (Great Pond) in the centre of the garden and the other near Takimi Teahouse.           View of Kobe harbour from Mt. Suwa. Mid-Meiji Period. This is the same as photograph #4871, although the tinting of the buildings is different. The Kodera family residence is visible, surrounded by walls on the right of the main street running north-south. The area beyond the residence and to the left (east) is the present-day hub of the Hyogo Prefecture administration and site of both the Prefecture Office and Prefecture Police Headquarters.             The Oura and Sagarimatsu neighbourhoods of the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement are seen on the right and left, respectively, from the hillside to the south of Higashiyamate. The houses stand in an organized pattern at Sagarimatsu. The photograph reveals the juxtaposition of the settlement and Japanese neighborhoods. Matsugae Bridge and Benten Bridge, both built in 1889, are visible.               View of the area near present-day Shin Kobe Station (Sanyo Shinkansen Line) and the New Kobe Oriental Hotel in Chuo Ward. Taken in the latter half of the Meiji Period. On the hillside to the left of the Takimichi (waterfall road) is a hot spring called Nunobiki Spa fed by boiling-hot, carbonated spring water from underground. There used to be many inns, restaurants, and teahouses along the road continuing from the northeast of Ikuta Shinto Shrine to this area.                 Motomachi, located at the foot of the Yamate area, was established when the residents of Yokohama Village moved here at the time of the opening of the port. Zotokuin Temple was located at the end of the main street (present day Motomachi-Dori). The building in this photograph is the Yakushi-do next to the main hall. The building next door is the Telegraph Station built in 1872. Since both were reconstructed in brick in the third decade of the Meiji Period, this photograph must have been taken prior to that time.                       Autumn tints of Takinogawa, Oji

                      The photographs of Takinogawa taken during the Meiji Period capture the beauty of the autumn colours. However, after World War II, the development of the residential areas changed the area upstream. The river banks were covered with concrete and the river started to smell due to waste water from houses. The local people launched a movement to protect the river, and finally the government built the Otonashi River Shinsui (Water Friendly) Park in 1985. Spring water is mixed with the natural flow and filtered. Thus, clean water is circulated in certain areas.
