View of the area near present-day Shin Kobe Station (Sanyo Shinkansen Line) and the New Kobe Oriental Hotel in Chuo Ward. Taken in the latter half of the Meiji Period. On the hillside to the left of the Takimichi (waterfall road) is a hot spring called Nunobiki Spa fed by boiling-hot, carbonated spring water from underground. There used to be many inns, restaurants, and teahouses along the road continuing from the northeast of Ikuta Shinto Shrine to this area.     Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, taken around the same time as photographs #2814 and 2827 (Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki). The presence of the wooden bridge over the river and the teahouse and the absence of a water supply pump suggest that this was taken on the mid-Meiji Period. The Medaki (Female Waterfall) is located at the top of the path to the left. This is the same as photograph #2821, only tinted differently.               The Juniso Falls

              Kumano Falls and Juniso Pond, located near Kumano Shinto Shrine (present day Chuo Park, Shinjuku Ward), were sightseeing spots since the Edo Period. The deity of Kumano Shinto Shrine had been transferred to the shrine from Kishu (present-day Wakayama Prefecture). Even during the Meiji Period these places were popular because they made an easy day trip from the city. It is said that many people used to bathe here in summer. The waterfall disappeared due to the construction of a water filtration plant in 1893, and the pond was eventually filled in. At present, people enjoy the hot springs in concrete buildings.                 The city of Shinagawa facing the sea

                View of Tokyo from the northern edge of the Shinagawa Shuku (post town), where inns and rest stops for horses were located. The hill on the left indicates that this photograph was taken from around present-day Yatsuyama Bridge. The street in the foreground is probably the Tokaido Highway. This was taken by Felix Beato before train tracks were laid along the sea following land reclamation. Although Shinagawa Station was originally planned near Shinagawa Shuku, the local people were against the plan and eventually the station was built further north than originally planned.                   Mid to late Meiji Period. The road in the centre led to Nunobuki Falls and thus was called Takimichi (waterfall road). Although not visible in this photograph, the residence of Kawasaki Shozo, founder of present-day Kawasaki Ship Building, Co. Inc, was located nearby. Kawasaki also founded a museum in 1890. This is the current location of Shin Kobe Station (Sanyo Shinkansen Line) and New Kobe Oriental Hotel. This photograph was taken by the Yokohama photographer Kusakabe Kinbei. The number 1207 is visible on the lower left. The photograph from the original plate bore the caption 1207 NUNOBUKI YAMA KOBE.                       The torii gates of Suwa Shinto Shrine are on the left. The restaurant Tokiwaro, frequented by men-of-letters and politicians, is on the hillside. The observation deck above the restaurant commands a panoramic view of the city and harbour as well as Kii Peninsula and Awaji Island in the distance. The photographs taken from this spot appear in photograph albums, postcards, and guidebooks.
