      Three thousand ryo a day falls where it must. This senryu poem means that everyday people spend three thousand ryo (monetary unit in the Edo Period), one thousand in the fish market in the morning, one thousand in the theatres during the daytime, and one thousand in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter in the evening. There was a fish market on the east side of the northern edge of Nihonbashi Bridge during the Edo Period. The man in this photograph is selling fish he just bought at the fish market. Probably taken near Nihonbashi. Since there was no refrigeration then, fish had to be sold within a day and people ate fresher fish than today.             A collapsed house in the river (Suimon River, perhaps) flowing through the city of Ogaki. A great fire broke out in Ogaki after the earthquake, which burnt 70% of the city.               Northern view of Kamogawa River. These are restaurants and inns built on the stone reinforced riverbanks. Stairs and ladders are placed for easy access to the river. Wooden poles for summer balconies are also visible. The sandbank in the middle of the river where a person is standing was used to dry dyed fabrics in the sun. The bridge visible in the background is probably Nijo Bridge.                 The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed from a path stretching southeast, facing northwest. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide. The photograph must have been taken before 1908, when the fence on the fifth story was removed during major repair work. The houses around the pagoda are brothels, and the area is currently called Tatsumi-Shinchi.
