        Photograph of Indian medical orderlies assisting with wounded from the Battle of the Admin Box, February 1944. Part of a collection of official photographs from Middle and Far East, World War Two (1939-1945). Collected by Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) Sir Frank Walter Messervy. The Battle of the Admin Box took place on the Southern Front of the Burma theatre in February 1944. The 5th and 7th Indian Divisions suffered over 7900 casualties, but successfully resisted Japanese attacks for the first time in the campaign. In doing so they pioneered methods which would lead to further Allied victories over the following year. Date: 1944

            Female pilgrims climb the stone steps to Kondo Hall at Nin'naji Temple. The photograph was taken facing east from the eastern approach to Kan'nondo Hall. The women wear zori slippers, hold long walking sticks, and carry something on their backs. The irimoya-style building in the rear may be a place for drinking water.                 The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.
