The entrance to the Belle Vue Hotel (site of present-ANA Hotel Gloverhill) in the Oura foreign settlement. This hotel, which opened in 1863, is one of the oldest in Japan. The photograph was taken in the mid-Meiji Period. Foreigners were the main guests because of its location.     The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

    Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident).       A caravan of rickshaws carrying people to view the cherry blossoms at Ueno Park. This photograph was taken some time after photograph #3155. The Seiyoken Annex sign is gone, and the cherry trees have grown. Shades are hanging from the eaves of the teahouse on the left, and its name, Insho-tei is written thereon. On the right, the Great Buddha still has its halo.         The hotel is still at this location, but the entrance faces west onto Hibiya Dori rather than north as in this photograph. A moat connected Hibiya Mitsuke and Yamashita Mitsuke. The moat was filled in at the time of the opening of Hibiya Park in 1903. Takarazuka Theatre and Sukaraza Theatre are now standing on the former moat. The building in this photograph burnt down on April 16, 1922.           Downstream area of Oura River

          This photo is taken halfway up the Oura River looking downstream. The street light was particular to the foreign settlement. The bridge downstream is Benten Bridge and the mountain on the other side of Nagasaki Port is Mt. Inasa. A boat called ‘sanpan’, used to fetch goods from the ships offshore, is moored. The area, ‘Sagarimatsu’, was named after the pine tree on the left. The roof of Myogyoji Temple is barely discernable.             The stairs on the right lead to Ueno Park from Ueno Square. The hill above the stairs was called Sakuragaoka. A Confucian Shrine (later moved to Yushima) was built there in 1630 by Hayashi Razan. The famous statue of Saigo Takamori by Takamura Koun was erected here in 1897. The roof to the left of the stairs is Ueno Kiyomizu-do, built by the priest Tenkai. The Kuromon (Black Gate) was stood formerly on the site at the left edge of the photograph.               The entrance to Nunobiki Falls in the mid-Meiji Period. The path leads to Medaki (Female Waterfall) and Odaki (Male Waterfall). This is the current location of Shin Kobe Station (Sanyo Shinkansen Line) and New Kobe Oriental Hotel. This photograph was taken by the Yokohama photographer Kusakabe Kinbei. The number 1207 is visible on the lower left. The photograph from the original plate bore the caption 1207 NUNOBUKI YAMA KOBE.                 Abura-machi is viewed from the intersection in Higashihamano-machi (present day Hamanomachi street). The water conduit in the foreground is now underground but flooded over in the great flood of 1982. The building on the corner to the right (site of a modern-day McDonald's outlet) retains the atmosphere of the Meiji Period with its sliding paper doors and wooden walls. Drinking water was supplied from Hongochi Dam to the public well in the foreground.                   The torii gates of Suwa Shinto Shrine are on the left. The restaurant Tokiwaro, frequented by men-of-letters and politicians, is on the hillside. The observation deck above the restaurant commands a panoramic view of the city and harbour as well as Kii Peninsula and Awaji Island in the distance. The photographs taken from this spot appear in photograph albums, postcards, and guidebooks. The lack of temple housing indicates that the photograph was taken after 1873, probably around 1882 in view of the fact that the photographer is Usui Shuzaburo. The path in front of the Buddha to the left leads to Ueno Seiyoken Restaurant, which opened in April 1873 as the second location of Tsukiji Seiyoken of Kyobashi Unemecho. A sign saying Seiyoken Annex is visible to the left of the path. The street in the foreground is Kuromon Dori (Black Gate Street).
