The Kamakura Highway (Misakaji) connecting the Kofu Basin in the south with Shizuoka is an old road dating back to ancient times. This photograph depicts the village of Fujinoki (present-day Misaka-machi, Fuefuki, Yamanashi Prefecture). Fujinoki was a tenma-shuku (a post town where travelers changed horses) on the Kofu Basin side, leading to the Misaka Pass of the Kamakura Highway. Misaka Pass is in the left background, viewed looking south from the Kofu Basin side. The Kodera family residence is visible, surrounded by walls on the right of the main street running north-south. The area beyond the residence and to the left (east) is the present-day hub of the Hyogo Prefecture administration and site of both the Prefecture Office and Prefecture Police Headquarters.                   This is the Byobu Torii Gate located at the intersection of present-day National Route 1 after going down Gongen Slope after walking up the old Hakone Highway from the post town of Hata area. But the width of the road is too wide for Hakonejuku,, and a pine boulevard is seen, but the deity of Hakone Shrine is said to have eyes pierced with pine, and so people avoided planting pine trees there.                       This is a farming village by a river. The water level is low, the flow is gentle, and the sandbank is visible. The stone embankment is built to prevent erosion. Houses with straw roofs and ceramic tiled roofs are built on relatively higher ground as a precaution for flooding and are connected by a small road. The rice crop hung out to dry indicates autumn. This may be an area near the source of the Hozu River in Kameoka.
