This is a photo with the Second Torii Gate of Hakone Shrine and the palanquin men. Although the sign board is on the right side of the gate in the picture painted by Kiyochika Kobayashi in 1880, it is moved to the left of the gate. Two iron pots made during the Kamakura Period to thank gods (Designated Important Cultural Asset) were moved to the main hall of the shrine and not visible on this photo.       The big bell of Chion-in Temple is seen from the west side of the bell tower. Men and women in kimono are looking at the bell over the iron fence. Also called Yoshimizu's Bell, this is the largest bronze bell in Japan and was cast at Sanjo-Kamanza foundry in 1636. It is 5.4m high, 2.7m in diameter, 29cm thick, and weighs 7.5 tons.         The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.           This is the view from Shin-machi of the post town of Hakone when facing Hakone checkpoint. The mountain behind is Komagadake. The street where the palanquin men are is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1). The house on the right is facing toward southwest and a child and an old man are enjoying the sun. Judging from their clothes, it appears to be either late autumn or early spring.             Futarasan Shinto Shrine is viewed from the Ojiri River side, on the east side of the lake. The facility, which enshrines the deity Futara-gongen, was built by Shodoshonin in 784.               This torii does not stand at present, only a monument next to a petrol station. But it was probably famous during the Meiji era, and many photos remain of this scene. A procession of mountain palanquins and umbrellas is seen, some of the people looking like soldiers.                 This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present.
