Stone steps on the approach to Mt. Minobu

Bodaitei flanked by cedar trees at Minobusan Kuonji Temple, headquarters of the Nichiren Sect of Japanese Buddhism in Minobu-machi, Minamikoma-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture. Bodaitei was a flight of 287 steps leading through the temple gate (Sangedatsumon, or Gate of the Three Liberations) to Soshido Seishinkaku.       The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit. Visitors reach these steps after passing under the famous Nemurineko (sleeping cat) carving in the east corridor of the main hall at Nikko Toshogu and going through Sakashita Gate.                       The Omote-sando approach to Nikko Toshogu is viewed from Nakayama Street. The ditch in the centre no longer exists. At the end of the approach is Toshogu. The stone torii and Omotemon (Niomon) can be seen in the cedar grove. The Hyakumonozoroe Sennin Gyoretsu (1,000 Samurai Procession Festival) passes along this approach.
