Bigo Tomotsu

This is a view of Taiga Island, east of Tomo Port at Fukuyama, looking from Higashihama. Taigashima Castle was the headquarters of the Southern Court during the Southern and Northern Court Period (1336-92). During the Edo period, Enpukuji Temple was founded and a watch station was built to monitor boats coming in and out of Tomo Port. This photograph captures the boat docks with stairs behind the shop.     This is a magnificient view of the famous Zaimoku Island, an interesting geological arch formed by erosion. The layered sedimentary rock of this island teaches us much about the origins of Matsushima Bay. Unfortunately, the arch was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1969.       Going down the Hozu River

      A yakata boat descending Hozu River is seen from the northern bank. The Kyoto Railway Company tracks and a tunnel are visible on the right. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. The river boats that carried lumber and goods from Tanba Kameoka to Kyoto were converted to leisure boats at the end of the Meiji Period when the Kyoto Railway was established.         This photo captures Matsushima Beach as seen from Kyogashima Island. The Kanrantei Teahouse in the Momohama Period (late 16th century) architecture style, a Designated Cultural Asset of Miyagi Prefecture, is visible in the distance, just to the left side of the island. The boat is a chabune with full sail.           A cargo boat on the Nihonbashi River

          View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.               Viewing Oura Foreign Settlement from Japanese Garden next to Chief Officer’s Residence at Dejima

              This is one of the oldest scenic photographs of Nagasaki. It was taken by Milton Miller, who came to Nagasaki in 1862, not long after the opening of Japan's doors in 1859. Miller seems to have visited the residence of the chief factor at the Dejima Dutch Factory. Taken from the garden beside the residence, the photograph provides a distant view of the foreign settlement where the 2nd phase of land reclamation work had reached completion and houses were being built. The column on the left is a flag pole to raise the Dutch national flag. The roof of Myogyoji Temple (temporary British Consulate at the time) is visible. The Glover house has not been built yet. Behind is Fukuurajima Island, where there is a natural botanical garden. This type of boat is called danbe .                   This is a old-fashioned cargo boat, or Bezai boat. The sail has been folded, and the boat is anchored. Tagonoura was a port where boats used to come and go during the Edo period with rice from the Bakufu territory of Kashima.                       The city of Shinagawa facing the sea

                      View of Tokyo from the northern edge of the Shinagawa Shuku (post town), where inns and rest stops for horses were located. The hill on the left indicates that this photograph was taken from around present-day Yatsuyama Bridge. The street in the foreground is probably the Tokaido Highway. This was taken by Felix Beato before train tracks were laid along the sea following land reclamation. Although Shinagawa Station was originally planned near Shinagawa Shuku, the local people were against the plan and eventually the station was built further north than originally planned.
