Kumamoto Castle
The high stone walls surrounding the principal compound of Kumamoto Castle are viewed from Chibajo at the eastern edge of the castle grounds. The upper part of the main castle tower and the Ura Gokai Turret to its right are visible. Kita Juhakken Turret in the upper left corner and Hira Turret are intact original structures and have been designated as Important Cultural Assets. When the photograph is enlarged, the sign board posted by the prefectural branch office (gun-yakusho) is so clear that the itinerary of Emperor Meiji's visit to the western part of Japan in 1872 is legible.==Date:unknown, Place:Kumamoto, Photo:Uchida Kuichi, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number66‐9‐0]
