This gate was called Niomon because statues of the Nio guardian deities were placed there until 1871, when Shinto and Buddhism were officially separated and the statues were transferred to Taiyuin Mausoleum. Subsequently, the gate was called Omotemon (Front Gate).             TOKYO, Japan - Japan has recommended two shrines and a temple in the city of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo to be added to the World Heritage List. File photo shows one of the shrines -- the Toshogu Shrine dedicated primarily to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. The World Heritage Committee is due to meet in Marrakesh, Morocco, for six days from Nov. 29.

              Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple. The subtitle reads The Correct Serving of a Japanese Meal. This is obviously a staged photograph for foreigners.                   Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio. The bridge in this photograph was washed away by a flood in 1902. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.                       Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street.
