Interior of the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple, facing east, with huge symmetrically arranged columns and various sized ema (votive picture tablets) donated by temple followers hanging from the ceiling. Since the ema at the top of the column in the left foreground was offered in November 1887, this photo was taken sometime after that date. This photograph taken from Mt. Kazagashira captures the central part of Nagasaki and the elevated area where the Nagasaki Prefecture Office, Nagasaki City Hall and Daikoku-machi are situated, with Urakami Shinden on the right. The date is around 1887. Nakashima River is visible in the centre. Suwa-machi Street

This photograph captures the view of Suwano-machi looking southeast. Koeizan Choshoji Temple (Nichiren Sect, 18 Tera-machi, Nagasaki City) is visible at the top of the stone stairs. Mt. Kazagashira is in the background. The street is flanked by stone side ditches, and there is a water outlet on the right. A oil lamp is standing beyond it. Zenpukuji Temple,Azabu

This is a Shingon Sect temple established by Kukai (Kobo Taishi) in 824. The sanmon and main hall are in the foreground and background, respectively. The large tree on the left is the upside-down gingko, which is still the largest gingko tree in Tokyo. This spot became the site of the American Legation after the effectuation of the Japan-U.S. Commercial Treaty in June 1859. Townsend Harris was the first envoy. The Legation moved to Tsukiji Akashi-machi in 1875. This photograph was taken in 1863 by Felix Beato, soon after Harris' arrival in Japan. The garden of Ginkakuji Temple

The truncated-cone shaped Kogetsudai, a sand form, in the middle and Ginshadan, on the right, are visible on the far side of Kinkyo Pond. Bunkai Bridge and Geisen Bridge are on the right and left, respectively. Looking down from the Motomachi Hyakudan (100 steps). In the foreground is Motomachi with the Yamashita Settlement on the other side of the Horikawa Waterway. Zotokuin Temple is visible on the right with next to its left the new Grand Hotel built in 1887. Panoramic view of NAGASAKI

This panoramic photograph of central Nagasaki was taken from Mt. Kazagashira. This is the first of three panels (#5615-5617) showing the area from the elevation of Umegasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture Office and Nagasaki City Hall to the then high school (now Sakura-machi Primary School) and all the way to Suwa Shinto Shrine. The date is after 1893, because the re-routing of Nakashima River has been completed. This third panel depicts (from the left) the area from Sakura-machi to the former high school and Suwa Shinto Shrine. Sokokura Spa

This is the Sokokura Spa viewed from the opposite side of Jakotsu River, after crossing Mannen Bridge. The hip roof on the left is Jizodo (a temple hall where a Buddhist deity is enshrined). The house with a thatched roof before it is Yorozuya , Umeya is in front of that. The two-storied building on the right is Tsutaya. The house partially visible on the right is Sengokuya Inn. The roofs of these spa houses are thatched. Above the stone walls is the temple compound in front of the Yomei Gate (right ). To the right and left are scaffold towers with a bell and a drum. The photo portrays only the drum tower on top of the right side of the Bronze Torii.
