Awazugahara

Awazugahara

Pine trees along the Tokaido Highway. These were called Awazu-no-Seiran ( sunny-day storm of Awazu ) because the trees made the whining sound of a storm on windy days. Traffic dropped on the highway after the opening of the railroad line. A total of 556 pine trees are said to have been standing here in 1937, but only a few remain along the old highway today.==Date:unknown, Place:Shiga, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number71‐43‐0]
