Tamazawa Inari Shrine

Family snapshot taken at the foot of the stairs of Tamasawa Inari Shrine in Asahi Village, Ibaraki Prefecture. This shrine is said to have been established near a natural spring on the way to Mutsu where Minamoto Yoriyoshi and Yoshiie, father and son, prayed for victory over the Abe clan. They ordered Kamakura Gondayuu to build the shrine in 1063.           Children's Day in Japan, held on May 5th. A time for families to celebrate the joy of a child, a tradition celebrated since ancient times. May 5th was traditionally a boy's holiday known as Tango no Sekku, when boys would fly carp-shaped flags and streamers, called koinobori (as depicted on this card). The family flies one carp flag for each son. The eldest son gets the largest flag and the youngest gets the smallest. There is also a black carp flag for the father and a red carp flag for the mother. Date: circa 1910s

            An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.               The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G. The street where the palanquin men are is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1). The house on the right is facing toward southwest and a child and an old man are enjoying the sun. Judging from their clothes, it appears to be either late autumn or early spring. The old name was Hachioji gu, and Sasaki Moritsuna organized a campaign to raise funds for building the shrine.
