Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

The stone lantern in the foreground was donated by the sugar wholesalers of Edo in 1862, and it still stands at present. A wooden torii gate stands in the centre, and behind it are the Kaguraden and the Jogu Romon (upper shrine gate). An illustration in the February 11, 1865 issue of The Illustrated London News and the art of Renjo Shimooka indicate that the Niomon gate at the torii existed until the end of the Edo Period.         The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                 This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present.
