Nishi Otani Entsu-kyo Bridge

Enzu-kyo Bridge at Nishi Otani Temple, looking north from the southern edge of Kogetsu Pond. Made of stone, the bridge was built in 1865. Called Spectacles Bridge because of its shape, the bridge bustled with people who came here to view the red and white lotus flowers from the end of the Edo to the Meiji Period, but no flowers are visible here. Poles to support the branches of pine trees rise from the pond. This type of garden, called kaiyushiki, had bridges, lanterns, and small pavilions to enhance enjoyment of the beauty of the garden. Otsune Palace is built in the shoin-zukuri style and was rebuilt in 1855.                     This is a Shingon Sect temple established by Kukai (Kobo Taishi) in 824. The sanmon and main hall are in the foreground and background, respectively. The large tree on the left is the upside-down gingko, which is still the largest gingko tree in Tokyo. This spot became the site of the American Legation after the effectuation of the Japan-U.S. Commercial Treaty in June 1859. Townsend Harris was the first envoy. The Legation moved to Tsukiji Akashi-machi in 1875. This photograph was taken in 1863 by Felix Beato, soon after Harris' arrival in Japan.
