The source of Mitarashi River is a spring at Mitarashi Shrine within the Shimogamo Shinto Shrine precincts. In the Meiji Period, bonfires were lit along the river and summer pavilions were built from which to observe them. In the middle of the bridge is a Western-style temporary arch and a sign that says Sanshisuimei (an expression to describe the beauty of the mountains and water) .               Stereograph depicting rickshaws on the Gojo-zaka slope surrounded by bamboo groves. The two women, one with a parasol, are passengers on the rickshaw pulled by the man with an amigasa hat. Bamboo fencing made of bamboo grass tied to bamboo poles prevents the bamboo from encroaching upon the path. Taken prior to 1909, when the slope was expanded to a width of 7.2 meters.                 Nunobiki Falls

                Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, taken around the same time as photographs #2814 and 2827 (Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki). The presence of the wooden bridge over the river and the teahouse and the absence of a water supply pump suggest that this was taken on the mid-Meiji Period.                   Arashiyama (Mt. Arashi) has a height of about 380 meters. It is located on the east edge of the Tanba Highlands and has Torigamine and Yamagamine to the northwest and Mt. Matsuo to the southeast. Hozu River runs from the north to the east at the northern foot of the mountain. A bamboo grove with a brushwood fence is shown at the bank of Hozu River, with hotels in the distance. A rickshaw with a woman passenger stands in front of the grove and a man stands nearby. The left side of the road is probably a boat anchorage. Two men are at the riverside, and Fujigawa Bridge, which crosses from the south of the shrine to Iwabuchi, is visible. This bridge was washed away many times from the beginning of the Meiji Period.                       Northern view of Kamogawa River. These are restaurants and inns built on the stone reinforced riverbanks. Stairs and ladders are placed for easy access to the river. Wooden poles for summer balconies are also visible. The sandbank in the middle of the river where a person is standing was used to dry dyed fabrics in the sun. The bridge visible in the background is probably Nijo Bridge.
