This street used to be called Kuromon Dori (Black Gate Street) because there was a black gate at the entrance of Ueno Park. The street stretches from the bottom of the stairs located in the park square to present-day Tokyo National Museum. Currently, this street is referred to as Sakura Dori (cherry blossom street) because of its many cherry trees.                     Western view of Shijo Street (at the foot of the stone stairs of Gion) from the western gate of Yasaka Shrine. The stone statue of a guardian dog on the right was built by Iwata Chubei, Koizumi Shinshichi, and other residents of Kankoboko-cho, Shijo-dori-Muromachi-Higashi-iru in 1882 as a wish for family peace and prosperity.
