A chrysanthemum exhibition at Dangozaka

Chrysanthemum dolls became popular in the Somei and Sugamo districts in the latter part of the Edo Period, but this shifted to the more centrally located Dangozaka in the Meiji Period. Visitors paid an admission charge to view the various chrysanthemum exhibitions set up in buildings. In addition to chrysanthemum dolls, rows of chrysanthemum blossoms were also displayed, as in this photograph.         Kameido Tenmangu Shrine (present-day Kameido Tenjinsha) is one of the three main shrines dedicated to Sugawara Michizane. The other two are Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto. The shrine is said to go back to the year 1661when the Shinto priest of Dazaifu, Sugawara Otorii Nobusuke, carved a holy image from the wood of the tobiume (plum tree) and enshrined it in the eastern part of Honjo.           Children enjoy the cherry blossoms while babysitting. Several hundred plum and cherry trees were planted at Yasukuni Shinto Shrine, and today there are said to be about 1,000 cherry trees there. The arrival of the cherry blossom season is predicted on the basis of the cherry trees at this shrine. The main hall enshrines a holy mirror made of ebony by Goto Kosuke and embellished with imaginary birds, dragons, chrysanthemum flowers and paulownia leaves.             This photograph of two women enjoying the cherry blossoms happened to be attached to the back of a 9 x 6.5cm photograph of Okuma Shigenobu. The location appears to be the pond at Ueno in Tokyo. However, no details are available. This is probably a private, not commercial, photograph.               Until the Murayama and Yamaguchi reservoirs were built in 1927 and 1934, respectively, the Tamagawa Waterway seen in this photograph was the main source of water for Edo and later Tokyo. Huge cherry trees stand along the banks. Only a few old cherry trees remain at present because most of them were cut down in 1954 to allow for the expansion of the Itsukaichi Highway north of the waterway. The spaces where people could put out blankets to sit and enjoy the cherry blossoms also disappeared, and people began to go to Koganei Park for cherry blossom viewing.                 Yokohama Park was opened in 1877 as a Western-style park for the use of both Japanese and foreigners. In 1909, after the abolition of the foreign settlement, the entire park came under the management of Yokohama City.                       The Ministry of Agriculture and Science sponsored an exhibition of silk cocoons, raw silk, textiles, pottery, and lacquerware from April 1, 1885. The buildings in the background are the exhibition halls. The building in front is the First Exhibition Building, and the one behind it the Second Exhibition Building. This photograph was taken in 1885 in front of the torii gate of Toshogu Shrine, looking north.
