Viewing cherry blossoms at Koganei Banks

People are enjoying the cherry blossoms from Koganei Bridge. The most beautiful scenery stretched for two kilometers upstream and two kilometers downstream from the bridge. It is not clear when the cherry trees were planted at Tamagawa Waterway because different documents give different dates. However, the Koganei Cherry Tree Monument (still existing near Koganei Bridge) puts it at 1737. Records show that Kawasaki Heiemon Sadataka, the caretaker of Musashino Shinden, and others planted cherry trees on both sides of the waterway near Koganei Bridge.         The area across Sumida River from Asakusa is Mukojima. There is no official boundary, but area from Mokuboji Temple to Makura Bridge is referred to as Mukojima. The banks of Sumida River at Mukojima are called Sumida-tei or Boku-tei. Cherry trees were planted here during the Kyoho Period (1716-36) by the 8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, and saplings were planted from time to time thereafter. This area thus became the most popular place to enjoy cherry blossoms in Edo.           This is a scene of the Sakurababa and Irabayashi neighbourhoods near the fork of Nakashima River and Narutaki River (present-day Nakanohashi bridge). This scenery was given the poetic name Sakuraba Seiran (cherry blossom storm) and was known as one of the eight best scenes of Nagasaki.                   Hotarujaya is viewed from the upstream side. Ichinose Bridge is on the right of the teahouse, and the handrail is visible through the trees. The road on the left is Nagasaki Road leading to Himi Pass. A new road stretching from this point to Yagami on the other side of the mountain was constructed in 1882 by the Himi Shindo Co. led by Matsuda Gengoro and eight others.                       Although not visible here, Sumida River is on the left. This is the view from Boku-tei (riverbank) facing upstream. There are many famous historical places at Mukojima such as Ushijima Shinto Shrine (also called Ushi-no-Gozen), Chomeiji Temple which is famous for its sakuramochi (cherry-flavoured rice cakes), Mokuboji Temple, site of Umewaka Mound, Kofukuji Temple with its statue of Hotei, and Mukojima Hyakkaen (Hundred Flower) Park. Yaomatsu Restaurant and the Kototoi Dumpling Shop opened here in the early Meiji Period. Mukojima was a popular among the cultural elite.
