Nokendo

Nokendo was known as the best place to view the eight famous scenes of Kanagawa, but the scenery was gradually spoiled after the reclamation of Deiki Shinden from the sea, and the focus of popularity shifted to Kyurantei.           Female pilgrims climb the stone steps to Kondo Hall at Nin'naji Temple. The photograph was taken facing east from the eastern approach to Kan'nondo Hall. The women wear zori slippers, hold long walking sticks, and carry something on their backs. The irimoya-style building in the rear may be a place for drinking water.             The national school system began in 1872. In those days there were nearly 3,000 terakoya (old style temple schools) in Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) educating commoners. These temple schools were instrumental in the spread of modern education.               Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street.                 Like #4950 and #4951, this is a stereograph made by the American company Underwood & Underwood. It shows the mountains in the western part of Hyogo Prefecture seen from Harima bay. Many foreigners visiting Japan enjoyed the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea while traveling between Nagasaki and Kobe or Osaka.
