This photograph is from the same series as photographs #4949 and #4951. Judging from the caption, it was probably taken before 1896. It is interesting to see the dress and expressions of the people as well as the street performer with a monkey.           View of Tokyo from the northern edge of the Shinagawa Shuku (post town), where inns and rest stops for horses were located. The hill on the left indicates that this photograph was taken from around present-day Yatsuyama Bridge. The street in the foreground is probably the Tokaido Highway. This was taken by Felix Beato before train tracks were laid along the sea following land reclamation. Although Shinagawa Station was originally planned near Shinagawa Shuku, the local people were against the plan and eventually the station was built further north than originally planned.               Cherry trees along the Koganei embankment

              Until the Murayama and Yamaguchi reservoirs were built in 1927 and 1934, respectively, the Tamagawa Waterway seen in this photograph was the main source of water for Edo and later Tokyo. Huge cherry trees stand along the banks. Only a few old cherry trees remain at present because most of them were cut down in 1954 to allow for the expansion of the Itsukaichi Highway north of the waterway. The spaces where people could put out blankets to sit and enjoy the cherry blossoms also disappeared, and people began to go to Koganei Park for cherry blossom viewing.                 This same photograph was carried in Nihon no Meisho (Beautiful Places of Japan) published by Shiden Hensansho in 1900 under the title, Entertainment on a Boat at Sumida River, and also under the title Boat Play in Tokyo F?kei (Tokyo Scenery) published by Ogawa Kazumasa in 1911. This photograph resembles two photographs taken by Uchida Kuichi, but it is probably an Ogawa Kazumasa photograph taken around 1897.                     Probably the ferry dock called Takeya-no-Watashi at Mukojima. Another photograph taken downstream shows these people at the same time. Stone steps descend to the river from where the man is standing in the centre, and the ferry dock called Terashima-no-Watashi is visible upstream. However, the boat depicted here is not a ferry but a yanebune (roofed boat) used for entertainment.
