The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.         The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                   Cherry trees along the approach to Toshogu Shrine,Ueno

                  Ueno Toshogu, the shrine to the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, was built in 1627 by Todo Takatora on the grounds of his second residence. This is a view of the Omote Sando shrine approach from the Karamon. The stone lanterns were donated by various feudal lords. The torii gate visible in the background was donated by Sakaida Tadayo, lord of Umayabashi Castle in Joshu (present-day Gunma Prefecture) in 1633. Later buried for unknown reasons, the torii was unearthed by Sakaida's grandson Sakai Tadatomo in 1734.
