          Farmers are busy planting rice in flooded paddies near Kyoto. They are barefoot and wearing short kimonos because of the water. The women have their heads covered with hand towels, and the men wear straw hats to protect themselves from the sun. The mountains indicate that the location is either Kameoka, Yamashina, or Minami-Yoshiro. This may have been taken by the British photographer H.G.             View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.               A raft shooting rapids is seen from the northern shore of the Hozu River. Boatmen are sitting on the rocks observing the scene. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. The river boats that carried lumber and goods from Tanba Kameoka to Kyoto were converted to leisure boats at the end of the Meiji Period when the Kyoto Railway was established.
