This is the Byobu Torii Gate located at the intersection of present-day National Route 1 after going down Gongen Slope after walking up the old Hakone Highway from the post town of Hata area. This site was very popular because Lake Ashinoko and the village of Moto-Hakone could be seen as well as the traffic hub.       This is the view from Shin-machi of the post town of Hakone when facing Hakone checkpoint. The mountain behind is Komagadake. The street where the palanquin men are is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1). The house on the right is facing toward southwest and a child and an old man are enjoying the sun. Judging from their clothes, it appears to be either late autumn or early spring.         This torii does not stand at present, only a monument next to a petrol station. But it was probably famous during the Meiji era, and many photos remain of this scene. A procession of mountain palanquins and umbrellas is seen, some of the people looking like soldiers.                 This is the old Hakone Highway near Ichinotorii gate at Moto-Hakone, and the cedar trees. The elctric pole is for the telegraph which opened between Tokyo and Nagasaki in 1873. Since the electric line was placed along the Tokaido Highway during the Edo Period, it is visible at Hakone Hachiri in the Old Tokaido Highway. Lake Ashinoko and Hakone Shrine can be seen between the trees. Behind it is Mt. Kurakake which is a part of the outer mountain range of Hakone. Since the telegraph pole made in 1873 between Tokyo and Nagasaki is present, and therefore, this photo was taken after that time. The cobblestone paved road was renovated between 1861 to 64. This site was a resting place and a man carrying rectangular wooden holder on his back and a worker are resting.
