        The Kamakura Highway (Misakaji) connecting the Kofu Basin in the south with Shizuoka is an old road dating back to ancient times. This photograph depicts the village of Fujinoki (present-day Misaka-machi, Fuefuki, Yamanashi Prefecture). Fujinoki was a tenma-shuku (a post town where travelers changed horses) on the Kofu Basin side, leading to the Misaka Pass of the Kamakura Highway. Misaka Pass is in the left background, viewed looking south from the Kofu Basin side.           This is the post town of Hakone as seen from what was once the Hakone barrier station. The buildings on the banks of Lake Ashinoko are part of the thatched roofed building complex, the honjin. The large structures with thatched roofs to the right are officially appointed inns (Honjin). Feudal lords stayed or rested here during the Sankinkoutai (A bi-annual period of madatory alternate residence in Edo for feudal lords, known as Daimyo). The mountain in the background is Mt.               View of Tokyo from the northern edge of the Shinagawa Shuku (post town), where inns and rest stops for horses were located. The hill on the left indicates that this photograph was taken from around present-day Yatsuyama Bridge. The street in the foreground is probably the Tokaido Highway. This was taken by Felix Beato before train tracks were laid along the sea following land reclamation. Although Shinagawa Station was originally planned near Shinagawa Shuku, the local people were against the plan and eventually the station was built further north than originally planned.                 According to the sign of the house on the right, it is Hatago (inn) Yorozuya Chozaemon at Odawara-cho in the post town of Hakone when facing Mishima-cho. The street in the centre is Tokaido Highway. A few people are visible afar. There are photos with many people with the same layout.
