The Kanda Josui (waterway) stretching from around Sekiguchidai in Koishikawa and Iida Bridge was called Edo River (different from the tributary of Tonegawa). It is said that cherry trees were planted here in 1884, but despite its shallow history, the area became a famous cherry blossom viewing site called the new Koganei by the end of Meiji Period.           The area across Sumida River from Asakusa is Mukojima. There is no official boundary, but area from Mokuboji Temple to Makura Bridge is referred to as Mukojima. The banks of Sumida River at Mukojima are called Sumida-tei or Boku-tei. Cherry trees were planted here during the Kyoho Period (1716-36) by the 8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, and saplings were planted from time to time thereafter. This area thus became the most popular place to enjoy cherry blossoms in Edo.                   Children enjoy the cherry blossoms while babysitting. Several hundred plum and cherry trees were planted at Yasukuni Shinto Shrine, and today there are said to be about 1,000 cherry trees there. The arrival of the cherry blossom season is predicted on the basis of the cherry trees at this shrine. The main hall enshrines a holy mirror made of ebony by Goto Kosuke and embellished with imaginary birds, dragons, chrysanthemum flowers and paulownia leaves.                     Iseyama Kotaijingu Shrine and Naritasan Yokohama Betsuin (a.k.a. Noge Fudo) were built in 1870 near Mt. Noge. The area attracted many people during the cherry blossom season and in autumn when the leaves turn colour.                       Large and middle-sized Benzai boats and Isaba boats at Oura, Nagasaki. The two at the right are relatively large Benzai boats built in the Kansai style of about 1000 koku , and the one in the center is a middle size of about 500 koku.
