Like Mt. Aso in Kyushu, Mt. Asama is a well-known active volcano. The smoke billows up hundreds of metres into the sky. The plume of smoke in this photograph, estimated to be of medium height (about 500 metres), was shot facing north from Karuizawa at the southern foot of the mountain . The peak on the left outer rim of the volcanic crater is Mt. Kurofu (2404m). Due to a violent explosion, Mt.     Mt. Asama is a three-layered composite volcano. This photograph captures a researcher taking shots of the smoke and his assistant at the edge of the mouth of Mt. Kamayama (2568m), the central crater. Official record keeping of Mt. Asama eruptions started only after 1886.
