This is a photograph of the Sanmon (Romon) gate of Sofukuji Temple taken between 1860 and 1870. The gate was reconstructed in dragon palace gate style. This is the outermost gate of the temple and consists of a central gate with two side doors.     Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident).       Female pilgrims climb the stone steps to Kondo Hall at Nin'naji Temple. The photograph was taken facing east from the eastern approach to Kan'nondo Hall. The women wear zori slippers, hold long walking sticks, and carry something on their backs. The irimoya-style building in the rear may be a place for drinking water.         The national school system began in 1872. In those days there were nearly 3,000 terakoya (old style temple schools) in Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) educating commoners. These temple schools were instrumental in the spread of modern education.             Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio. The bridge in this photograph was washed away by a flood in 1902.               The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.                   The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) made of bronze. Designated as a National Treasure in 1897, it is the main object of worship at Kohtokuin Shojosenji Temple. Historic documents state that work began on a gilt statue of Shaka Nyorai Buddha about 13.5 meters in height in the year 1252. It is not known when it became a statue of Amida Buddha.
