Ikuta Shrine
Ikuta Shinto Shrine is located a few minutes on foot north of JR Sannomiya Station (present-day Chuo Ward). In the year 806, 44 families were designated to serve as shrine supporters (kanbe), and this is said to be the origin of the name Kobe (Kobe and kanbe are rendered with the same ideographs). The main hall is in the center, the grove behind it is the remainder of the great Ikuta forest. The forest has been famous since ancient times, and it is often mentioned in songs. It also the site of a 12th-century battle between the Genji and Heike clans. Taken in the first half of the Meiji Period.==Date:unknown, Place:Kobe, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number103‐7‐0]
