The Juniso Falls

Kumano Falls and Juniso Pond, located near Kumano Shinto Shrine (present day Chuo Park, Shinjuku Ward), were sightseeing spots since the Edo Period. The deity of Kumano Shinto Shrine had been transferred to the shrine from Kishu (present-day Wakayama Prefecture). Even during the Meiji Period these places were popular because they made an easy day trip from the city. It is said that many people used to bathe here in summer. The waterfall disappeared due to the construction of a water filtration plant in 1893, and the pond was eventually filled in. At present, people enjoy the hot springs in concrete buildings. On the hillside to the left of the Takimichi (waterfall road) is a hot spring called Nunobiki Spa fed by boiling-hot, carbonated spring water from underground. There used to be many inns, restaurants, and teahouses along the road continuing from the northeast of Ikuta Shinto Shrine to this area.         A waterfall in Dogashima Island

        This is the water fall of Shirabe. The bridge in front of the fall still exists although slightly different in shape. A man wearing yukata summer kimono is standing at the centre of the bridge. The fall became a part of the garden when the Hiramatsu villa was built around 1887 and the water from the fall flows into the pond in the garden. The volume of water is abundunt and the difference from present-day waterfall compared to the one prior to the Great Kanto Earthquake is evident. The rock above the man on the right still exists.
