Nakashima River and Amigasa-bashi Bridge

Amigasa Bridge over Nakashima River. This is an arch-style stone bridge connecting Hakata-machi with Motokamiya-machi. It was destroyed by the great flood of Nagasaki in 1982 and replaced with a new bridge with steep stairs. Suwa Shinto Shrine is visible beside the large pine tree on the left.       Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio. The bridge in this photograph was washed away by a flood in 1902.                   The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                     This Kannon-do was rebuilt by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1649. The style of construction is koran mitesaki-zukuri. The photograph captures a flock of pigeons flying from Niomon (gate). The building burned down in an air raid on March 10, 1945. The present-day Kannon-do was erected on October 17, 1958.
