TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the trilingual website for accessing the latest information on Japan that Kyodo News launched on Dec. 1, 2011. The website, entitled Japan Portal (http://www.japanportal.jp), allows users outside Japan to access information on topics such as tourist spots and reconstruction from the March earthquake and tsunami in English, Chinese and Korean. The division will conductresearch in a wide range of fields to solve various technical problems at the decommissioning site, including evaluation technology to detect the aging deterioration of structures. With the aim of fostering human resources, a CFReND branch office will be established at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant site this summer. On-site exchanges of opinions between engineers at the decommissioning site and Tohoku University faculty and graduate students will be promoted.                 NTT's Transparent Rechargeable Battery

                NTT has developed a "see-through rechargeable battery" (photo) that delivers about 50 times more power than conventional batteries. The average transmittance, which was previously about the same as that of sunglasses, has been tripled to 69%, equivalent to that of window glass. By gelatinizing the electrolyte, the average voltage was increased from 1.7 volts to 2.5 volts, which led to the improvement in transmittance. It also made it possible to deposit the film over a larger area, resulting in a larger battery. Six of the new batteries have the performance of one button battery. The company expects to use the new batteries for transparent signboards in tourist spots that post information without spoiling the scenery, windowpanes that can store electricity obtained from solar power generation, and lenses for smart glasses.
