UNESCO 'eco park' list

KOFU, Japan - Hirofumi Nakagomi, mayor of Minami-Alps in Yamanashi Prefecture, receives the news that UNESCO has decided to add Japan's Southern Alps mountain range to its list of biosphere reserves, known as eco parks in Japan, at the city hall around 1 a.m. on June 12, 2014. The 302,474-hecatre region straddles Yamanashi, Nagano and Shizuoka prefectures. UNESCO also decided to add the Tadami beech forest in Fukushima Prefecture to the list. (Kyodo)

                Japanese geologist Miyashiro dies, might have fallen off cliff

                TOKYO, Japan - Akiho Miyashiro (file photo), an 87-year-old Japanese geologist renowned for his research in plate tectonics, was found dead July 24 in a forest park in New York. Local police suspect Miyashiro might have fallen off a cliff while walking in the park. The geologist was a professor at universities such as Columbia University in New York City and New York State University.
