Urban Animal Album
KOBE, Japan - Surprised by the sound of a camera shutter, a raccoon stands on its hind legs in a side ditch near a shrine in the city of Kobe, western Japan, on June 26, 2014. The animal, native to North America, became feral in Japan after some raccoons escaped from zoos or were abandoned by people who kept them as pets. As a result, more than 20,000 raccoons are captured across the country every year because of the damage they cause to crops. (Kyodo)
