Yomiuri skipper's father dies

TOKYO, Japan - File photo taken in 1975 shows Mitsugu Hara (L), coaching his son Tatsunori (R) as manager of Tokai University Fuzoku Sagami Senior High School in Kanagawa Prefecture. Mitsugu Hara, who as a high school baseball manager won two national championships, died of heart failure at a hospital in Kanagawa Prefecture on May 29, 2014. He was 79. Tatsunori Hara is the current Yomiuri Giants manager.

Record high temperature of 40.9 C marked in Saitama, Gifu

KOSHIEN, Japan - A mother mops her daughter's brow during a game of the national high school baseball championship at Koshien Stadium on Aug. 16. The temperature in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, and Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, climbed to a record high of 40.9 C on the same day, breaking the previous record of 40.8 C marked in Yamagata Prefecture in 1933.
