70th anniversary of Tsushima Maru sinking
NAHA, Japan - Survivors and bereaved relatives observe a minute of silence to mourn the 1,485 people who died in the 1944 sinking of the Tsushima Maru, a Japanese ship carrying hundreds of schoolchildren, at a ceremony in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, on Aug. 22, 2014, the 70th anniversary of the event. Mourners offered silent prayer at 10:12 p.m., the time the first torpedo fired by a U.S. submarine hit the 6,754-ton ship. (Kyodo)
