Ruins of 'checkerboard moat' unearthed at Matsue Castle

MATSUE, Japan - Parts of a "checkerboard moat" unearthed in the ruins of Matsue Castle in Matsue, western Japan, are shown on Oct. 16, 2014. The moat, crisscrossed by raised sections to hinder attackers' progress, is so named for its resemblance to the playing board of the Japanese chess "shogi." (Kyodo)
