U.S. demanded Japan pay $650 mil. for Okinawa reversion costs

TOKYO, Japan - Japanese diplomatic documents declassified on Feb. 18, 2011, show the United States in 1969 demanded Japan pay $650 million, worth some 234 billion yen based on the exchange rate at that time, to finance unspecified costs related to the 1972 reversion of Okinawa from U.S. control to Japanese sovereignty.
