Dousing operation at Fukushima nuke plant
TOKYO, Japan - Photo from a Kyodo News helicopter more than 30 kilometers away shows the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture before a dousing operation began on March 17, 2011. The Self-Defense Forces poured water onto the No. 3 reactor on March 17, 2011, in an attempt to cool down its apparently overheating spent fuel pool to prevent the release of radiation. At front left is the No. 2 reactor with the building housing the reactor remains. To its left is the No. 2 rector with white smoke billowing from it. (Kyodo)
