U.S. official's remarks on Japan
TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows some of the notes compiled by students after a speech given by Kevin Maher. Maher, a U.S. official in charge of Japanese affairs at the State Department, reportedly likened the Japanese culture of maintaining social harmony to a means of ''extortion'' and described the people on the southern island of Okinawa as ''lazy'' in a speech given in Washington in late 2010.
