Tsunami subsides before huge wave strikes
MIYAKO, Japan - Successive photos, obtained by the Iwate Prefectural Museum, show the March 11, 2011, tsunami striking an area in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, shortly after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake. The top photo shows a fishing port breakwater (in the center of the photo) submerged at 3:12 p.m., the middle photo shows it reemerging at 3:16 p.m. as the water level falls and the bottom photo shows it being overrun by a huge tsunami with an estimated speed of 115 kilometers per hour at 3:18 p.m. The museum said many people, who had escaped from their homes, were killed after returning home to fetch valuables when the initial tsunami wave subsided.
