New airport in Fukuoka tests 'porter robots' to carry people, ba

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - A pair of ''porter robots'' developed by local machinery builders are put to use on a trial basis at New Kitakyushu Airport in Fukuoka Prefecture on April 26. The trial was conducted by a staff member who acted as a passenger after a trip and got on one of the wheeled box-shaped machines to move around the airport. The other smaller unit was used to carry her baggage. (Kyodo)

KASHIHARA, Japan - A dragon is depicted in the painting on the east wall of the ancient Kitora tomb in Asuka, Nara Prefecture. The Cultural Affairs Agency on April 14 released infrared photos of the paintings at the tomb, which is thought to have been a burial place for someone related to Emperor Temmu of the seventh century. Okinawa to make signs more foreigner-friendly

NAHA, Japan - Signs in Okinawa Prefecture written in Roman letters for foreigners will be changed to make them easier to understand. Tthe Cabinet Office's Okinawa General Bureau said April 9 it plans to change about 1,300 such signs within five years. (Kyodo)
