Toyota begins weekend factory operations

    Masahiro Sakurai, the mayor of Kashiwazaki City in Niigata Prefecture, said on April 19 that the decommissioning plan for the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station submitted by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) Holdings, Inc. In August, the company announced its intention to decide on a policy of decommissioning one or more nuclear reactors within five years if it were to resume operations of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa No. 6 and No. 7 reactors and secure a non-fossil power source ratio of more than 40%, combining renewable energy and nuclear power. Although the reactors passed the government's safety inspection in December 2017, Niigata Governor Hideyo Hanazumi has said that he will not discuss restarting the reactors until the results of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident Verification Commission's review are available.       Electrical discharge machine introduced by Nagatsu Manufacturing as part of its work automation efforts.

      Nagatsu Seisakusho will begin automating its main plant to improve the efficiencyof machining die parts. The company will introduce work changers for 5-axis machining centers (MC) and other equipment to replace processed parts. The company plans to introduce several 5-axis MCs and work changers as a set if they are utilized smoothly. The installation cost is about 10 million yen. Workers without machining skills only need to take the workpiece and electrodes in and out of the shelves at the site. The company's domestic sales are about 1.6 billion yen. However, the domestic mold market is shrinking. Rather than expanding sales, this automation initiative is aimed at strengthening cost competitiveness and promoting work style reform. Once the automation at the head office plant gets going, the company plans to start automation at the Niigata plant in Mitsuke City, Niigata Prefecture in two to three years.         IHI's ocean current power generation system demonstrator "KAIRYU

        On the 25th, IHI unveiled its underwater floating power generation system demonstrator "KAIRYU" (photo) at its Yokohama Works (Isogo Ward, Yokohama City). It is being developed as part of a project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), and generates electricity by turning 11-meter diameter fiberglass turbine blades underwater with the power of ocean currents. Compared to the previous operation, the autonomous control program that adjusts the tilt of the turbine blades and the floating structure during operation has been improved, and rectifier plates have been added so that the ocean currents will hit the blades more efficiently. Power generation efficiency is 50-70%, which is higher than that of solar power (12%), onshore wind power (20%), and offshore wind power (over 30%).
