British MOX plant to be closed

LONDON, Britain - File photo taken in March 2011 shows facilities related to nuclear power in Sellafield, Britain. Ten Japanese electric power companies that operate nuclear power plants jointly covered the cost of renovating a Sellafield-based plant to produce plutonium-uranium mixed oxide, or MOX, fuel. Now the British government-affiliated Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, which runs the facility, has determined Japan will no longer need MOX fuel in the wake of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, and has decided to close the reprocessing plant, industry sources said Oct. 18, 2011.                 Kyushu Electric Power signs LNG bunkering contracts for coal with two shipping companies

                The cost of the project and the share of the cost with Kyushu Electric Power Co. will not be disclosed. The two shipping companies mentioned the spread of LNG-fueled vessels. Hitoshi Nagasawa, president of Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), said, "We will basically use LNG-fueled vessels for car carriers. Junichiro Ikeda, president of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), expressed his willingness to work on infrastructure development, including fuel supply. The fuel will be supplied by Kyushu Electric Company (Tobata Ward, Kitakyushu City) at its onshore shipping facilities.                   Towa Electric Industry's 6-kilowatt charger for electric vehicles

                  Towa Electric Industry (Kita Ward, Okayama City), in cooperation with Wako Denken (Yao City, Osaka Prefecture), has commercialized a low-cost 6-kilowatt battery charger for electric vehicles (EVs). The total price (excluding consumption tax) is about 200,000 yen if installation work is also undertaken, which is about half the cost of installing a standard 6-kilowatt charger. The battery can be recharged in 12.5 hours with Nissan's LEAF e+ EV, halving the recharging time compared to a 3-kilowatt charger. Towa Electric Industry is engaged in the maintenance of power generation facilities, telecommunications work, and electrical work for stores in Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures.                     Murata Manufacturing's all-individual battery that has started shipping samples

                    Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will startmass production of all solid-state batteries using ceramics technology within fiscal 2019. The company will build a new mass production line in the battery-related production building at Yasu Plant (Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture). The production capacity is planned to be 100,000 units per month for the time being. The capacity of the prototype is more than 10 milliampere hours, 100 times higher than that of other companies' products, the highest level in the industry, and the company will accelerate its expansion into energy-related markets, including the lithium-ion rechargeable battery business acquired from Sony in 2005. The company will mass-produce surface-mounted "ceramic all-solid-state batteries" that use ceramic materials as the electrolyte.
