TOKYO, Japan - Photo released on Oct. 16 by the Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea, a private group supporting Japanese abductees, shows a woman believed to be Teruko Kase, a Japanese who disappeared in Chiba Prefecture at the age of 17 in 1962. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said Japan may bring up her case at its next talks with North Korea if it confirms that two photos smuggled out of the country are of the woman. (Kyodo)

Men Found on Boat in North East Japan Say they came From N. Korea

AKITA, Japan,-Nov. 24 Kyodo - A boat carrying eight men claiming to be fishermen from North Korea has washed ashore in the north eastern Japan prefecture of Akita, police said Friday. The police received a call from a resident in the city of Yurihonjo around 11:30 p.m. Thursday about suspicious men at the seaside. They later found the men on the wooden boat at a nearby marina. The men had no life-threatening injuries and appeared to speak Korean, the police said. They have been taken into protective custody. Hachiro Okonogi, chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, told reporters after a Cabinet meeting that the men have said they were fishing before the boat broke down and washed ashore. In November 2015 a wooden boat drifted ashore in the city of Noshiro in Akita and skeletal remains of two men were found inside the vessel and nearby.

Ex-abductee Hasuike wins nonfiction award

TOKYO, Japan - Repatriated abductee Kaoru Hasuike (file photo) won an award Aug. 27, 2009, for a nonfiction work that features his experience of being abducted to North Korea and living in the reclusive country. Hasuike went missing along with his girlfriend, Yukiko Okudo, in Niigata Prefecture in July 1978, and returned to Japan in October 2002 with Okudo, to whom he got married in North Korea, after Pyongyang admitted to past abductions of Japanese citizens. Iizuka named as new head of group of abductees' kin

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeo Iizuka (R), vice chairman of the group of relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea, speaks at a news conference at a Tokyo hotel Nov. 24 after he was named as the group's new leader to replace Shigeru Yokota (2nd from R). Yokota's daughter Megumi was kidnapped by Pyongyang in 1977 when she was 13, while Iizuka is an elder brother of Yaeko Taguchi, who was taken to N. Korea in 1978 when she was 22.

Japanese NGO donates medical supplies to N. Korea flood victims

TOKYO, Japan - An employee (R) of Japan International Volunteer Center, a Japanese nonprofit organization, hands over medical supplies to Kangwon Province People's Hospital in Wonsan, North Korea, on Oct. 26. According to JVC officials, JVC delivered 2.4 million yen worth of confectioneries and medical supplies to flood victims in North Korea in late October. The money was collected through public donations in Japan, the officials say.

Japan calls on N. Korea to resolve abduction issue on anniversary

NIIGATA, Japan - Shigeru and Sakie Yokota, the parents of Megumi, who was abducted to North Korea from Niigata 30 years ago when she was 13, attend a meeting in Niigata on Oct. 15 calling for public support on the abduction issue. Oct. 15 marks the fifth anniversary of the repatriation of five Japanese abductees from North Korea and Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura renewed calls for North Korea to resolve the abduction issue. North Korea says Megumi committed suicide, a claim rejected by Japan.

Kin ask gov't to seek early resolution of N. Korea abduction issue
