Icebreaker Shirase leaves on 48th Antarctic expedition

TOKYO, Japan - The Japanese icebreaker Shirase leaves Harumi dock in Tokyo on Nov. 14 for its 48th Antarctic expedition, marking the 50th anniversary of Japan's initial exploration of the continent. The 11,600-ton exploration ship is expected to arrive at Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica in mid-December and return to Japan next spring. (Kyodo)

Japan to test Antarctic water following base oil spill

SHOWA BASE, ANTARCTICA - Members of the Japanese Antarctic expedition collect water samples from Lutzow-Holm Bay on Jan. 9 to test them for pollution following an oil spill from its base camp that occurred Dec. 17.

Japan conducts geological study in Antarctica

SHOWA BASE, Antarctica - Japan's 41st Antarctic expedition conducted a large-scale geological study in Antarctica by detonating dynamite in January to research underground structures. A total of 180 seismometers were buried deep under ice over a 200-kilometer-long area. Some 600-kilograms of dynamite were set at each of six points to cause an artificial earthquake of about magnitude 2. Snowmobiles carry rubbish from Antarctic base to icebreaker

SHOWA BASE, Antarctica - Two snowmobiles, carrying discarded machinery and other rubbish from Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica, head toward the icebreaker Shirase on Jan. 3. The Shirase will bring the trash back to Japan. In 1998, a previous Japanese expedition team to Antarctica begun hauling away old electric generators, scrapped construction materials and other discarded items left behind by previous expeditions. The photo was taken by a journalist included in the current Japanese expedition team.

Icebreaker Shirase opens to public in Akita

AKITA, Japan - The icebreaker Shirase is opened to public at Akita port Sept. 7. Shirase has sailed on Antarctic expeditions for 17 years and she will set sail again in mid-November. The ship was named after Akita-born Nobu Shirase, a Japanese explorer who led Japan's first successful Antarctic research expedition in 1912.
