Snow-covered Gassho-style farmhouses
TOYAMA, Japan - These ''gassho-style'' farmhouses in Ainokura, Toyama Prefecture, are covered by a one-meter layer of snow on Dec. 13. The houses, which were registered on the World Heritage list in 1995, feature thatched gable roofs that slope down at an angle of 60 degrees. The roofs help the snow to slip off and prevent the houses from collapsing. (Kyodo)
